Quagliano RARE GRAPE red

History: Quagliano wine is an incredibly rare, uniquely aromatic varietal with thin skins that, though classified as a wine grape, is also ideal for consumption as a table grape and in the past, for its diuretic qualities, used as the so-called “grape cure”. The Quagliano grape variety is not sensitive to illness or other adversity though, being thin-skinned, it is highly susceptible to splitting from rain potentially resulting in botrytis. This varietal has high vigor and ripens late.

A few producers keep it alive through small-batch bottlings that rarely leave the region. With a grape this local, it often means tasting one estate’s interpretation across different styles or harvest years can result in the clearest way to understand what the varietal can do.

Officially listed in the National Catalogue of Vine Varieties since 1992, Quagliano produces three styles of wine - a still dry and sweet, and a sparkling version. Quagliano wine is distinctive, with a color ranging from cherry red to light ruby, with violet reflections.

What to Expect

Quagliano produces a delightful and unique light-bodied sweet wine, often in a sparkling style, with a characteristic pale pink hue. The wine’s profile is defined by considerable, yet delicate, tannins that coat the palate, balanced by low alcohol and bright acidity. Ripeness is paramount, as under-ripe grapes can result in green and unappealing flavors, but when successful, the wine is charming and refreshing.

Tasting notes: On the nose, it is delicately vinous, with a characteristic violet aroma.

Even more unique is the taste – medium-bodied and slightly tannic: sweet, pleasantly fruity, and fine, reminiscent of strawberry, harmonious both in the lively and sparkling versions.                                Source: (https://www.quattrocalici.com/)
