Ortrugo (Barbesino) white

History: Ortrugo is an ancient white grape variety native to western Emilia, the first certain mentions dating back to the 19th century, historically rooted in the hills and plains of the province of Piacenza where it is still concentrated. It is found sporadically in the Parma and Reggio Emilia areas, though always as a minority variety.

For much of the 20th century, Ortrugo was used primarily in blends, but from the 1970s onwards it began to establish itself as a single-varietal variety, to the point of becoming the protagonist of the Colli Piacentini DOC and its typical sparkling versions.

Officially registered in the National Catalogue of Vine Varieties since 1970, Ortrugo grapes lend themselves well to stainless steel vinification, aimed at preserving freshness and light fruity notes. The moderate natural acidity may require careful management of fermentation temperature to avoid loss of liveliness. Its aromatic neutrality and savory character produce particularly pleasing results.

The frizzante (semi/lightly sparkling) and sparkling versions, made using the Charmat method, are the most characteristic: lively, light and pleasantly aromatic with fine bubbles and an agile profile. It is also suitable for dry, more structured still wines, which express herbaceous notes and light floral nuances. The still versions show greater structure but always maintain a clean, essential style, with notes often described as smelling of tart apples, white flowers and peach, with a light, refreshing palate. The grape is also permitted in the Vin Santo wines of the broader Colli Piacentini.

Although the variety was traditionally used as a less-glamorous blending partner for Malvasia, changing tastes have seen a move away from the latter, and Ortrugo is now often made as a varietal wine. A push from local producers in the late 20th Century has led to it now being one of the most planted varieties around its hometown of Piacenza in the northwestern corner of Emilia-Romagna. Here, the climate and exposure of the vineyards result in strikingly varied wines across the region, and from vintage to vintage.

Tasting notes: Ortrugo wine is generally pale straw yellow in color. On the nose, it offers delicate aromas of white flowers, green apple, pear, light herbs, and sometimes a subtle mineral note.

On the palate, it is fresh, medium -bodied, with moderate acidity, good drinkability, and a savory, dry finish.

Food pairings: Best served well-chilled, its delicate fruit notes, subtle minerality, and vibrant acidity make it incredibly versatile. It pairs perfectly with delicate seafood, cured meats, vegetable-forward dishes, and classic Italian aperitivi.
