Maceratino (Ribona) RARE GRAPE white

History: Maceratino is a white Italian wine grape variety that is grown predominantly in the Marche along the Adriatic coast, specifically in the province of Macerata, from which it derives its name. For most of the 20th century, and into the 21st century, plantings of Maceratino have been declining and becoming increasingly rare. (Source: Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Its presence in the region has been documented since at least the 18th century, but its roots are believed to be even older, linked to local selections developed in the hilly vineyards that characterize the Marche hinterland. For a long time, the grape was confused or assimilated with other traditional white varieties of the region, such as Trebbiano Toscano and Passerina, with which it shares some morphological similarities. Beginning in the second half of the 20th century, more thorough ampelographic studies and the recovery of old vines allowed Maceratino to be recognized as an autonomous and distinctive variety. Its value has grown thanks to its inclusion in the Colli Maceratesi DOC denomination, where it has assumed the role of an identifying grape of the territory, capable of producing fresh, balanced wines deeply linked to the Marche hilly context.

Officially registered in the National Catalogue of Vine Varieties since 1995, Maceratino is a grape variety that adapts well to the hilly terrain of the Marche region, showing good drought tolerance and reasonable resistance to fungal diseases. Maceratino grapes produce musts with good acidity, moderate sugar content, and a fine, discreet aromatic profile. Vinification takes place almost exclusively in stainless steel to preserve freshness and fragrance, although some wineries experiment with brief maturation on the fine lees to increase structure and complexity. Tasting notes: Maceratino wines have a pale straw yellow color with greenish highlights. The bouquet is fresh and delicate, with aromas of citrus, apple, white flowers, and light herbaceous notes.

On the palate, they are balanced and smooth, with a linear acidity that lends tension and pleasantness. The body is medium-light, and the finish is clean, savory, and slightly mineral. (Courtesy of: https://www.quattrocalici.it/)

Food pairings: Because of its high acidity and citrus notes, it is a versatile food pairing wine,
especially with local Mediterranean and seafood dishes such as Seafood and Shellfish, Fresh and Lightly Aged Cheeses, Vegetable Dishes, White Meats.
As a sparkling wine it makes an excellent choice served as an aperitif, particularly with options cited above.
